MITCH GOBEL

Mitch Gobel (b. 1990) is an Australian abstract artist based in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales. Raised on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, his practice draws on the atmospheric and emotional qualities of the Australian landscape, translating these impressions into fluid, layered abstractions.

Working primarily with resin, pigments and industrial materials, Gobel develops his compositions through successive poured layers applied just before the medium begins to cure. During this critical moment, pigments shift, separate and settle organically across the surface, creating dynamic movements that balance intention with chance. Encased in resin, these interactions are suspended in time, evoking a sense of movement beneath a quiet, glass-like surface.

Influenced by natural processes such as erosion, growth and decay, Gobel’s work explores the tension between control and surrender. Colours merge, dissolve and reform, blurring boundaries and reflecting the subtle intelligence and rhythms found within natural systems.

After briefly expanding his practice into acrylic and oil painting in 2022, Gobel returned to resin in 2025 with renewed focus, establishing a dedicated warehouse studio and recommitting to full-time practice.

Gobel’s work is held in private collections in more than 60 countries, with a strong collector base across Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work explores the relationship between control and surrender through layered compositions of resin, pigments and industrial materials. Working quickly before the mediums cure, I build surfaces through successive layers, allowing pigments to move, repel and settle organically across the work. These chemical interactions create fluid movements that shift the composition beyond my initial intention, introducing an element of chance into the process.

Encased in resin, these moments are suspended in time. Beneath the glass-like surface, colour appears to continue moving, creating a sense of depth and quiet motion.

My practice is deeply influenced by the natural world and the subtle systems that shape it. Processes such as erosion, growth and decay inform the way colours merge, dissolve and reform within the work. In many pieces, darker palettes gradually transition into lighter areas, blurring the distinction between beginning and end and creating compositions that feel cyclical and continuous.

Over time I have come to see this interaction between materials as a reflection of a broader human experience. Just as pigments resist and eventually find balance on the surface, life often moves between tension and harmony. By allowing materials to behave according to their own nature, the work embraces uncertainty while seeking moments of stillness within chaos.
