Joni Dennis
An artist based in Melbourne, Australia, Joni Dennis’ work has been admired locally and internationally. Her piece ‘Waltzing Matilda’ secured 5th place in the Florence Biennale.
Dennis works primarily with mixed-media painting, while also expanding into sculpture and stop-motion animation. Her large-scale paintings focus on ethereal, figurative portraits and sweeping, gestural landscapes. Her style is vibrant and energetic. She incorporates saturated colours, painterly brushstrokes and striking tonal contrasts into her paintings.
Dennis is interested in how fashion and style can create a psychological landscape on the body. She often combines landscape and fashion into images that powerfully elevate the women in her portraits. Her influences stem from Impressionists such as Monet, fashion illustration and 17th Century lace making.
